Hatfield-McCoy Trails
The Hatfield-McCoy Trails system is a premier, world-famous off-highway vehicle (OHV) trail network encompassing over 1,000 miles of professionally managed trails across the scenic mountains of southern West Virginia. Open 365 days a year to ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and select 4x4 vehicles, the system is divided into several distinct trail networks that cater to all skill levels, ranging from scenic, leisurely rides to highly technical, challenging terrain. Rich in history, the trails wind through the rugged backwoods once home to the legendary Hatfield-McCoy family feud. A defining feature of the system is its "trail-friendly" infrastructure, which directly connects riders to local Appalachian towns, allowing visitors to legally drive their off-road vehicles off the dirt and straight into town to easily access lodging, restaurants, gas stations, and machine rentals.
Pinnacle Creek Trail
The Pinnacle Creek Trail system is one of the most popular and scenic networks within the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, most noted for its breathtaking views and its massive interconnected layout. Located in Wyoming County, it directly connects to the trail-friendly towns of Pineville and Mullens, West Virginia, giving riders easy, street-legal access to local food, fuel, and lodging. The terrain leans toward accessible and moderately challenging riding, featuring a mix of green (33% easiest) and blue (41% more difficult) trails, alongside more technical expert routes and single-track options. A major highlight of Pinnacle Creek is its extensive connectivity; it directly links to three other systems—Warrior, Indian Ridge, and Pocahontas—forming one of the largest continuous off-road riding areas in the entire network for extended multi-day trips. Additionally, its prime location puts riders less than an hour away from world-class whitewater rafting and winter snow skiing.
Indian Ridge Trail
The Indian Ridge Trail system is highly regarded as a central, deeply immersive network within the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, famously cutting right through major off-road hubs like the Ashland ATV Resort. Located in McDowell County near Northfork, West Virginia, it offers a beautifully rugged and remote backcountry experience filled with endless miles of canopied forests, scenic mountain vistas, and diverse wildlife. The trail layout provides a well-balanced mix of terrain, featuring family-friendly green trails for beginners alongside challenging mud holes, technical black diamonds, and single-track paths for experienced dirt bike and ATV riders. Because of its strategic location, Indian Ridge serves as a vital bridge in the trail system, directly connecting to both the Pocahontas and Pinnacle Creek networks to allow riders to embark on massive, multi-day journeys without ever having to trailer their machines.
